Music out of Silence
Both pieces by Smetana and Beethoven on this program were written after the composers lost their hearing. Gabriela Frank is a prominent contemporary composer who was born with high-moderate/near profound hearing loss. Through the Eastman School of Music, we will try to collaborate with the Rochester School of the Deaf to have a special presentation of this program at the school.

Beethoven - Sonata in C minor for violin and piano, op. 30 no. 2
Five composers overcoming hardships, personal or global, through their music, giving us inspiration for better days to come.
Bach wrote his monumental Chaconne for solo violin after returning from a trip and finding that his wife Maria Barbara had died. The piece explores a wide range of human emotions, and showcases incredible variety and innovation in writing for one instrument alone. Debussy’s Sonata was written during the First World War, and despite its creator’s poor health at the time, manages to reinvent the traditional Sonata format into something new and modern. Despite facing racism in various forms throughout his life, William Grant Still, often referred to as the “Dean of Afro-American Composers”, managed to create a uniquely American yet personal style, fusing Modern Classical, Blues and Broadway influences. His brilliant and moving Suite for Violin and Piano was inspired by three sculptures by African-America artists.
Grayzna Bacewicz, one of the most important and prolific women composers of all time, came under pressure from the communist regime in Poland in the 1950’s to incorporate Polish folk music into her compositions. She responded with a series of delightful and virtuosic short works for violin and piano, while keeping her own personal imprint. Beethoven’s struggle against fate is well known. Written in the same key as his famous 5th Symphony, his Sonata in C minor for Violin and Piano is one of the most dramatic works in this genre.
